Think back to the Christmas classic Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. If the Plaza Hotel bellhop in the movie looks familiar to you, that’s because it’s Deuce Bigalow’s Rob Schneider. Looking back 31 years from now, the SNL alum believes the holiday flick is “superior” to the original.
This month, fans already had a debate about Home Alone 3 and whether or not it was a good movie. Now another topic of discussion regarding the Home Alone franchise is whether Home Alone 2 is better than the first. Rob Schneider, who played Cedric the Bellman, was more than happy to share with Fox News Saturday Night why he believed the second movie trumps the first. Here was his reasoning:
“Home Alone 1 is just a family who just doesn’t know how to take care of their children. But Home Alone 2 is actually a movie that’s about a child’s ingenuity… and also a family that doesn’t know how to keep … an eye on their children.”
Rob Schneider also couldn’t help but notice how much hair his 20-something-year-old self had! So, what both films have in common is the McCallisters fail to look after young Kevin. In fact, you can argue that Home Alone 2 is basically a rehash of its predecessor. Kevin gets left behind and has to fend off two crooks. The biggest difference is that 10-year-old Kevin is alone in New York City — one of the world’s biggest metropolises. Audiences got to follow him on tourist attractions and see him come up with ingenious ways to thwart two crooks. With everything taken up a notch, Schneider’s reasoning makes sense.
What was Rob Schneider’s Time Like in Home Alone 2?
Before his breakout role in Home Alone 2, Rob Schneider’s star power revolved around Saturday Night Live in seasons 16-17. While speaking to AOL Entertainment, The 50 First Dates actor recalled the day he found out he got the job.
“I just remember thinking, if I’m standing next to Macaulay Culkin in a movie, people are going to see this. When I went to that first meeting, I didn’t know they were giving me the job,” said Schneider. “I was just starting in show business. At that point every time I had a meeting, I never got the job. I was still being used to being famous because of Saturday Night Live. I remember being in that meeting and I thought I was just auditioning, but they gave me the job right there.”
As Rob Schneider was an up-and-coming actor, he got to work with some prominent people for one of his first big-screen gigs. He remembered working with Tim Curry, who played the Plaza Hotel’s concierge, and his ability to nail every acting choice he made. Schneider also can’t forget about Donald Trump, who had a cameo role and owned the Plaza Hotel at the time, letting the cast “take over” his hotel and being nice to everyone.
Another big-name actor at the time Rob Schneider had a blast with was the film’s star, Macaulay Culkin. He reflected the two had an incredibly funny moment joking around in a trailer outside of the Plaza.
“‘What are the colors of the American flag?’ He says, ‘Red, white and blue.’ And I say, ‘I told you I could make you say the world ‘blue.’ And he says, ‘You said ‘green!’ And I went, ‘Got you!'”
With so many memorable moments, it’s no wonder Rob Schneider favors the Chris Columbus sequel.
