Maestro Ending Explained: What Happens at the End?

Viewers of Bradley Cooper‘s biopic Maestro, based on the life of music composer Leonard Bernstein, have a lot of questions and want to know what happens at the end of the movie. Here is Maestro’s ending explained.

What happens at the end of Maestro?

The ending of Maestro takes place in 1987 and sees Leonard Bernstein continuing to teach and conduct music following the death of his wife Felicia Montealegre nine years prior from lung cancer. He also has flings with his male students. Bernstein later admits in an interview that he misses Felicia’s presence, and his mind flashes back to an image of her younger self walking into the yard.

Is Leonard Bernstein gay or bisexual?

Leonard Bernstein was gay and not bisexual, according to his West Side Story collaborator Arthur Laurents.

Laurents called Bernstein “a gay man who got married,” adding: “He wasn’t conflicted about it at all. He was just gay.”

Prior to his marriage to Felicia, Leonard Bernstein was in a brief romantic relationship with David Oppenheim, a clarinetist. However, after marrying Felicia, he remained faithful for many years until he began having affairs with multiple men, which strained his relationships with Felicia and his eldest daughter, Jamie, until he reconciled with them.

However, it is still possible that he could have been bisexual. At one point in the film, he suggests to David’s child that he had slept with not only her father but her mother and David’s wife as well.

Does Leonard Bernstein suffer from monophobia or fears being alone?

Leonard Bernstein hints at suffering from monophobia or fear of being alone at one point in the film. Also, his actions of constantly being around people and not closing his restroom doors when using them suggest that he is very monophobic.

What illness does Felicia Montealegre suffer from?

Felicia Montealegre was diagnosed with lung cancer in her later years.

As a result of her smoking throughout her youth, Felicia got lung cancer and began experiencing health complications, which ended her acting career. She underwent extensive surgeries and chemotherapy to help manage her cancer, but unfortunately succumbed to it and died in 1978.
