Zack Snyder Has Comic Book Movie Fatigue: ‘No One Thinks They’re Going to a One-off Superhero Movie’

Zack Snyder is behind some of the most controversial superhero movies of the past generation, but the director recently revealed he is also suffering from what many are calling “superhero fatigue.”

Speaking to The Atlantic about his recently released sci-fi film Rebel Moon, Snyder acknowledged that he too was fatigued by the number of comic book adaptations being made in Hollywood.

He called the comic book adaptations a “cul-de-sac now” and said that no one is really interested in telling self-contained, one-off stories anymore. “No one thinks they’re going to a one-off superhero movie,” said Snyder.

Snyder believes he can build a fanbase for Rebel Moon

While Snyder’s comments may seem confusing given the fact that he’s attempting to create a sprawling universe in the form of Rebel Moon, those at Netflix believe his case is a bit different. For one, they don’t have a large library of history to pull from and will have to try and build their fanbase up from the ground floor.

“We’re a new studio, so we don’t have 100 years of library titles,” Ori Marmur, Netflix’s vice president of original studio film, said. “And if we’re going to build our own, we really have to be willing to lean into some risk.”

Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire is now available on Netflix. A sequel, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, is planned for release on April 19, 2024.
