The voice actor for Kratos in the modern era of games, Christopher Judge, says that he won’t ever voice a younger version of the character for any God of War game.
During a recent live stream event with YouTuber AbdBay and Streamily, Judge spoke about his preparation for the character. Judge said that he’s always tried to make the character of Kratos his own, and that he never watched any scenes from past games. He did this out of respect for Terrence C. Carson, the original voice actor of Kratos.
Judge didn’t look into any old God of War games in order to make the character his own
“I never watched any of the scenes from the earlier (God of War games) because [Terrence C. Carson]’s so great, and I thought it would be a disservice to try to voice match him or anything, nor did they ask for it,” Judge said. “From the very beginning, it was about making it my own.”
Judge went on to say that, recently, he was offered a role that would have seen him portray a younger Kratos, but that he turned it down immediately.
“They wanted me to somewhat match the voice of that character, and I said, ‘Absolutely not,’” said Judge. “I love this dude. That would be such a slight. We are not celebrated for what we, as individuals, bring to stuff. That’s across the board, no matter what you do. I just think it’s inherently wrong to try to commandeer something else that someone has already established.”
It’s unclear exactly what role Judge is talking about, but many fans believe it to be the recently released God of War Ragnarok DLC, Valhalla, which ends with Kratos coming face-to-face with an illusion of a younger version of himself.
