What happened at the end of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters
Monarch ended with May, Cate, and Lee Shaw falling through the portal to Hollow Earth in Kazakhstan in 2015.
With Monarch: Legacy of Monsters coming close to its end, its plot is finally coming together with all major characters assembling in Kazakhstan. The episode showcased Bill Randa and Keiko figuring out where the Titans were coming from and how they were able to travel across the planet without being noticed.
They came through portals and lived in a parallel realm underneath the planet, which is the same Hollow Earth we saw in Godzilla vs. Kong. Lee Shaw also figured it out and tried to take matters into his own hands. Earlier in the episode, we saw him blow up the portal in Alaska that closed the gateway and sent the Frost Vark Kaiju back to Hollow Earth.
Similarly, he set up charges around the portal in Kazakhstan, which was the exact location where Keiko died in the 1950s. But when Cate tried to warn him about its consequences, he didn’t listen to her reason and initiated the blast. As a result, May fell through the portal and just when Cate was about to go through as well, Shaw tried to save her. However, he wasn’t successful and both of them fell through right before the episode ended.
Did Lee Shaw, Cate, and May die?
No, Lee Shaw, Cate, and May did not die in episode 8 as they were transported to Hollow Earth.
The latest episode ended with a cliffhanger, making it seem that May, Cate, and Lee Shaw may have died as they fell through the portal. But the mid-season trailer of Monarch has already revealed their survival.
The above trailer shows a shot of Cate and Shaw running across Hollow Earth (precisely at 00:53). Another shot at 1:03 showcases May, Cate, and Lee trying to make their way back to Earth in a device. Meanwhile, Tim argues with Monarch leader Natalia Verdugo about saving them.
Now, it’ll be interesting to see how they make their way back to the human world in the coming episodes where Godzilla is also set to take on the Ion Dragon.
